Good Isn’t Good Enough: Why a Great Résumé Wins in Consumer Goods

Match Point Recruiting

The consumer goods world is competitive — and getting more so by the year. If you’re aiming for roles that support major retailers like Walmart, Sam’s Club, Amazon, or Target, a good résumé isn’t enough anymore.

You need a great résumé — one that doesn’t just tell what you can do, but proves what you’ve already done and how that experience can drive results for your next employer.

Because in this industry, the résumé gets you the interview. And the interview gets you the job.

The Résumé Gets You the Interview — The Interview Gets You the Job

Many candidates apply for a position because they genuinely like the company or the brand. That’s a great start — but it’s not what gets you hired.

Your résumé needs to do more than show interest. It has to demonstrate impact.

Hiring leaders aren’t asking, “Can this person do the job?” They’re asking, “Who has already delivered measurable results — and can do it again here?”

It isn’t always about what you can do. It comes down to what you have done, and how that experience can benefit the company moving forward.

Good Résumés Blend In — Great Résumés Stand Out

When hiring managers or recruiters review dozens of résumés for similar roles, most sound the same:
“Managed key retail account.” “Led cross-functional teams.” “Responsible for sales and category growth.”

Those lines are fine — but fine won’t get you noticed.

A great résumé does three things differently:
1. Quantifies success. Replace “Managed Amazon business” with “Delivered +10% growth on a $75M Amazon portfolio through pricing optimization and digital activation.” Specific numbers tell a credible story of results.
2. Shows retailer fluency. If you’ve supported Walmart, Amazon, or Sam’s Club, speak their language. Reference the tools and KPIs that matter — Retail Link, Scintilla, Vendor Central, Supplier Gateway, and CommerceHub. These platforms demonstrate you understand the operational and analytical systems that drive retail success.
3. Highlights leadership and collaboration. The best résumés show how you influence people and performance — mentoring teams, aligning with marketing and replenishment, and driving sustainable growth across channels.

“I Liked the Company” Isn’t Enough

Many candidates apply because they admire a brand or culture. That’s understandable — but it’s not a differentiator.

A winning résumé doesn’t just say, “I want to work here.” It shows, “Here’s how I can help your business perform better.”

That means connecting your background directly to the company’s goals. If you’re pursuing a sales or category role, emphasize JBP execution, retailer alignment, or omnichannel activation. If it’s an operations or analytics role, lead with process improvement, automation, or supply-chain performance.

Your résumé should make the reader say, “This person has already done exactly what we need.”

The Market Is Competitive — Be Stronger on Paper

Consumer goods professionals compete in some of the most dynamic markets in the country — Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Bentonville among them — all major supplier hubs with deep retailer ecosystems.

In these markets, roles supporting major retailers are highly sought after. Candidates are smart, strategic, and experienced.

So how do you stand out?
– Tell your story. Show how your experience aligns with where the company is going, not just what you’ve done.
– Quantify results. Use metrics that matter — sales lift, market share gains, OTIF improvements, or digital performance growth.
– Keep it clean. Use a scannable, ATS-friendly format that highlights your impact.
– Lead with results. Every bullet should start with an action verb and end with measurable value.

In a crowded field, clarity and credibility always win.

The Bottom Line

Your résumé won’t get you hired — but it will get you noticed. And in this competitive market, that’s everything.

Take the time to create a résumé that:
– Speaks the language of major retailers
– Demonstrates measurable impact
– Clearly shows how your experience drives business results

In the consumer goods industry, good is the enemy of great. A great résumé gets the interview. And the interview gets the job.
